WITCHES

As you can see, this sculpture depicts a group of witches heading off to the sabbat. It is titled “Hexenritt” [The Witches Ride]. Some of you might remember a post I did a few years back with this title about an 1870 engraving (which has recently appeared in lots, and lots of coffee-table books).

This German postcard is signed “H. Zahl,” about whom I can discover nothing at all. The caption, in German, French, English and Russian, is: Das Hexchen, Petite sorcière, Little witch, Čarodějka.

For centuries woman with a different behaviour were called witches. Some were too clever for men, other had a strong political or religious powers, there were some of those "witches" that didn't want to follow the "rules" dictated by society. And there were some that called themselves witches. With all those beliefs, our culture created an image of an evil and ugly witch.

Zatanna has been a magic user after many people’s hearts. The daughter of master magician Zatara, Zatanna initially joined the Justice League trying to find her father. She eventually stepped out of her father’s shadow and became a fully-fledged member of the Justice League — yet she made a major lapse in judgment by mind-wiping and lobotomizing the villainous Doctor Light (as well as Barry Allen rogue the Top), as well as wiping Batman’s memory of the event. Since then, she and Bats have reconciled, even almost entering a relationship. She has since been a member of Grant Morrison’s Seven Soldiers, regaining her confidence while battling agents of the Sheeda horde. While Batman might be MIA with the rest of the Big Three after Final Crisis, Zatanna is still a member of the Justice League.

One of the other folks Omnicomic had a chance to speak with at New York Comic Con was Vincent Ferrante, the man behind Witch Hunter from Monarch Comics. He was gracious enough to give us an interview, so read on for tons of information about his upcoming book.

Omnicomic: So tell us, how'd you get into writing comics? Starting your own lable?

Ferrante: I created Witch Hunter in 1976 while playing with Mego dolls. I worked on the premise for years, developing a Witch Hunter bible throughout college writing courses as part of my curriculum, and began running Witch Hunter adventures in Comic Culture magazine in 1993 after I properly copyrighted and trademarked the character. I started Monarch Comics after running the strip for about a year, publishing the first Witch Hunter comic book in the '90s, and getting some more life experience as an editor for various publications, book companies and magazines, as well as exploring England for a little while.

The Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) is a fictional character that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appears in X-Men #4 (Mar. 1964) and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. She is Quicksilver's twin sister, and both were part of the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, led by their father Magneto,[1] but none of them knew about their own connection to each other until years later. They eventually left Magneto and became members of the Avengers.[2] Wanda eventually married Vision, another member of the Avengers, who is a synthetic man.[3]

Born at the Wundagore base of the High Evolutionary, in proximity to the eldritch energies of the Elder God Chthon; Wanda and her brother Pietro's mother, Magda, fled Wundagore shortly after their birth. Although not known at the time, Chthon formed a mystic bond with Wanda, who, it was later learned, was destined to serve the role of Nexus Being, a living focal point for the Earth dimension's mystical energy.

The White Witch is a fictional comic book character who exists in the DC Universe, a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes in the 30th century. Her real name is Mysa Nal, although her name was given as Xola Aq in Silver Age Legion stories in Adventure Comics; the revelation that her name was actually Mysa Nal was a later retcon. She is the sister of fellow Legionnaire Dream Girl and daughter of former High Seer of Naltor Kiwa Nal. Like Dream Girl, she is a native of the planet Naltor, where nearly everyone has the power of precognition; however, unlike most Naltorians, Mysa cannot foresee the future.

So, what exactly is a Witchblade? It is an ancient, mysterious, and extremely powerful weapon, one kept secret and spoken of only in whispers by those who know of it. The weapon itself is sentient and shape-shifting, and can generate fire and electricity. It is moody. It is unpredictable. And when worn, it telepathically becomes one with its wearer.

I Married a Witch is a 1942 fantasy romantic comedy film, directed by René Clair, and starring Veronica Lake as a witch whose plan for revenge goes comically awry, with Frederic March as her foil. The film also features Robert Benchley, Susan Hayward and Cecil Kellaway. The screenplay by Robert Pirosh and Marc Connelly and uncredited other writers, including Dalton Trumbo, is based on the novel The Passionate Witch by Thorne Smith, who died before he could finish it; it was completed by Norman Matson and published in 1941.Many believe that this along the later movie is a partial inspiration for the ABC TV Series Bewitched. Bewitched was a fantasy-comedy loosely based on the feature films I Married a Witch and Bell, Book, and Candle which dealt with the problems that arise when a mortal man marries a beautiful witch.

Following Vertigo, she reteamed with Stewart and Jack Lemmon in Bell, Book and Candle (1958), a comedy tale of modern-day witchcraft that did not do well at the box office. In 1960, she co-starred with Kirk Douglas in the critically acclaimed Strangers When We Meet with Walter Matthau and Ernie Kovacs.

IMHO, I think it is a tragedy that there has not been enough hype about Stardust, a movie I'm actually quite excited about, especially since it's based on one of my favorite Neil Gaiman novels, and is IMHO one of the few modern stories that can rightfully be called a fairytale of the old traditional mould.
